Cactus Crochet Wall Hanging Pattern

Generally speaking, I am a very simple person. After all, I really don’t gravitate toward fancy things when it comes to decorating my space. I prefer functionality above anything else. At the same time, when it comes to my crochet creations, I love creating designs that are bright, bold and eye-catching. Undeniably, this cactus crochet wall hanging is no exception.

After the success of cactus mason jar cozy pattern release, I wanted to create something on a larger scale. I figured if people like a tiny cactus on a mason jar, then they would LOVE a giant cactus as a crochet wall hanging. Sure enough, this pattern soon became more popular than my cactus mason jar cozy.

I’ve even seen others make this on a much larger scale and turn this into a blanket, which I think is a fabulous idea!

Crochet Cactus Pattern

This cactus crochet wall hanging pattern feature a giant cactus made out of bobble stitches – which happen to be my favorite stitches. The bobbles kind of give the cactus a 3-D effect, making the cactus stand out against it’s colorful background.

I have also included a solid background variation if you prefer that. Maybe you prefer a simpler look. Or maybe you just don’t want 1,000 ends to weave in 😆 Either way, I’ve got you covered.

I’ve included two full color graphs – one plain with the plain background and one with the serape background. There are also written instructions as well – you choose which set of directions you prefer to use. The written instructions come first. If you want to use the color graph (my preferred method) then scroll on down and you will find both color graphs.

Supplies Needed for the Cactus Crochet Wall Hanging

Materials:

  • I Love This Yarn! from Hobby Lobby or any similar worsted-weight acrylic yarn. Two skeins – one for the main color and one for the cactus color. If you are making the serape variation, you’ll need one cactus color and 10 other assorted colors of your choice. Feel free to copy the colors I used (scroll down see the color chart)
  • H8 (5.00mm) crochet hook
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Dowel or stick approximately 22″ in length

Skill Level:

Advanced beginner. This pattern includes some basic color work. This is a great pattern to introduce the challenges of color work to those who have never done it before.

Stitches used and Abbreviations:

  • ch = chain
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet
  • tr = treble crochet

Special Stitches:

bbl = bobble stitch (note: bobbles are worked on the wrong side and “pop out” on the opposite (right) side).

  1. yo, insert hook into st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, draw through first two loops on hook (two loops remaining on hook)
  2. [yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, draw through first two loops on hook] three more times. yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull up a loop (you should now have six loops on your hook), yo, draw through all six loops on hook.

MC = main color

CC = contrasting color (this is your cactus)

Gauge

Gauge isn’t necessarily important for this pattern, but if you prefer to match gauge, this is what had:

4″ square = 13 hdc x 9.5 rows (worked with 5.00mm hook)

Finished measurements

(if following gauge) Length (without fringe): 30.5″ Width: 19″

Pattern notes

  • This pattern is written using standard US crochet terms.
  • The chain 1 at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch.
  • When changing colors, you will work the very last stitch before the color change like this: work the stitch as normal until you have to draw through the remaining loops on hook. Drop your yarn, pick up the next color and use that to draw through the loops. You are now ready to work the next stitch with the new color. Likewise, you will do the same when switching back to your previous color. Important: when you drop your yarn, make sure to lay it across the next stitch/stitches and you will work your next stitch over that strand. Don’t let it fall in front of your work. (this is explained in detail below – scroll down)

Here is an example of a round from the pattern:
MC [hdc in first st and in next 21 sts], CC, bbl [hdc, bbl] 7 times, MC [22 hdc], ch 1, turn.” This row should be read like this: “with the MC, hdc in first st and in next 21 sts – before you complete the 22nd stitch, you will pick up the CC and complete your stitch with that – now with the CC work one bbl [hdc in next st, bbl in next st] 7 times, – before completing your bbl, make sure to switch to your MC – with the MC, hdc in next 22 sts, ch 1, turn.”

Sections that read “bbl [bbl, hdc] 7 times” should be read as “work bbl in the next stitch [hdc in next st, bbl in next st] 7 times.”

How to Change Color in Crochet:

How to change colors in crochet
How to change colors in crochet
Switching back to the original color
Pulling through with the original color
  1. Firstly, when you make the stitch before the color change, start the stitch as normal, but before you finish the stitch, drop your working yarn.
  2. Secondly, pick your next color and use that to pull through the last 2 loops on your hook and finish the stitch. (Although, when you are changing color after a bobble stitch, you will drop your working yarn once you have 6 loops on your hook, and then pull through all 6 loops with the new color)
  3. To change back to your previous color, just repeat the same steps you used to change colors the first time.
  4. Lastly, pull through the last 2 loops on the hook with the previous color and now you’re ready to work with the previous color again.

Color Graph Instructions for the Crochet Wall Hanging

Each square on the graph represents one stitch.

Since we crochet right to left, that is how the graph should be read. The first row will start at the number 1 on the right and when you turn to work the second row, you will be working from stitch 59. Tip: all the bobble rows will be worked from right to left.

  • B = bobble stitch
  • H = half double crochet

All other (pink) squares represent a hdc.

How to add the fringe to your wall hanging:

You may use acrylic or cotton yarn for this. I personally like the visual contrast of having a cotton fringe.

Step 1. Cut one piece of yarn 16″ long. Cut in half.

Step 2. Line both pieces up together and fold in half. You will now have 4 pieces of “fringe” at the bottom.

Step 3. With your crochet hook, pull the loop through the first stitch at the bottom of your wall hanging.

Step 4. Pull the fringe ends through the loop tightly to secure it.

Depending on your preference, you will do this in every stitch or every other stitch. I did every stitch, but most of my testers did every other stitch.

Serape Variation for the Cactus Crochet Pattern

For the serape variation, you may use any brand of worsted-weight yarn to match these colors.

Attaching the Dowel/Stick:

First, make sure it’s about 2″ longer on each side of the wall hanging. Next, thread a tapestry needle with yarn or twine. Line the wall hanging up with the dowel. Attach your yarn to the dowel and simply whip stitch around the dowel making sure to go through each stitch across the top.

Lastly, decide how long or short you want your wall hanging to hang. Cut a piece of yarn or twine and attach it to each end of the dowel. Weave in any loose ends.

Making the flower

Round 1: Make magic circle, ch 1, 9 hdc in circle, join to first hdc (9 hdc)

Round 2: ch 1, 2 hdc in first st and in each st around. Join to first hdc (18 hdc)

Round 3: ch 1, in first st make a dc, tr, tr, dc, *sc in next st, [dc, tr, tr, dc] in next st* repeat from *to* around. (10 petals)

Weave in all ends. Your crochet cactus wall hanging is now finished and ready to display!

I hope you loved making this beautiful crochet wall tapestry. Which version did you end up making? I’d love to see your work 🙂
