EASY CROCHET BEANIE PATTERN

One reason I love the Almond Ridge Stitch so much is because it gives my crochet projects a knit like appearance. For instance, the wave pattern looks similar to cables and the ridges are stretchy, just like knit and purl rows! This stitch sequence never gets old and I’m loving using it for so many different projects.

This crochet beanie pattern uses Heartland worsted yarn from Lion Brand. On the other hand, you could use a bulky yarn if you like chunky beanie – you could even use super bulky yarn – like Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick for a super bulky beanie!

This hat pattern is really versatile and you can easily size up or down depending on your needs and your style.

Materials:

  • 1 skein of Heartland worsted yarn from Lion Brand.
  • H-8 (5.00mm) crochet hook
  • scissors
  • tapestry needle
  • optional: faux fur pom pom

Skill level:

  • Advanced beginner. This pattern uses basic stitches, however, being able to tension your yarn properly is very important.

Pattern notes:

  • This pattern is written using standard US crochet terms.
  • The chain 1 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch.
  • Loose tension is very important for this particular design! You may need to go up a hook size or two if you have very tight tension.
  • In addition to the Almond Ridge sequence, each row has an additional 6 sl sts on the brim end and an additional 2 sl sts on the pom pom end of the hat.
  • This hat is worked in turning rows, from the brim to the top, making a rectangle shape that will be sewn together at the end to form a hat.

STITCHES USED AND ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS):

  • ch = chain
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • blo = back loop only

GAUGE:

  • 1″ square = 4 hdc x 3 rows (worked with 5.00mm hook)

FINISHED SIZE: (laying flat and assembled but without Pom Pom):

  • Length: approx. 9″
  • Width: approx. 9″
  • Brim (is tapered): 7″ across

How to adjust the size:

This hat is designed for an average adult female. To size this hat to fit your head, once you’ve made several rows, simply stretch the brim around your head where you’d normally wear a hat. As long as it’s comfortably snug (not tight, but not too loose that it will be too big) you can fasten off and start assembling your hat. You can also go up to a #5 yarn and use a larger hook, if you need a bigger hat. Likewise, you can use a lighter weight yarn and a smaller hook for a smaller hat.

Rows 5 and beyond: repeat rows 1- 4 until your work reaches 15″ at the brim (or until you can comfortably stretch the brim all the way around your head.

Fasten off and leave a long tail long enough to sew your beanie closed. Make sure that your last two rows are the opposite of the first two rows. That way, when you sew them together they will ‘fit’ together better, plus it will make your seam invisible.

Repeat rows 1-4 until the brim end measures 15″

Sewing up the sides:

Thread the tail on to a tapestry needle. Fold your rectangle, short sides together, with the wrong side facing you. Insert your tapestry needle through the 2 innermost loops of each stitch. Whip stitch all the way across. Fasten off and weave in ends.
