Materials

Advanced beginner.

Pattern notes

  • This pattern is written using standard US crochet terms.
  • This pattern is worked in the round, except for one round which is a turning round.
  • You can adjust the size by increasing/decreasing in any multiple of 2.
  • This is meant to have a somewhat snug fit around the bauble.
  • This bauble cover is finished by crocheting the last decreasing round with the bauble inside for the best fit.

Stitches used and abbreviations

  • sk = skip
  • ch = chain
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • yo = yarn over
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • hdc 3rd loop = half double crochet 3rd loop only
  • hdc dec = half double crochet decrease
  • bbl = bobble stitch

Half Double Crochet 3rd Loop Only (dc 3rd loop)

Work a hdc as normal, except insert your hook into the very back loop (the third loop).

Half Double Crochet Decrease (hdc dec)

This is my version of the hdc dec, specifically for this pattern as a traditional hdc dec is a bit too thick.

*to make a hdc dec: yo, insert hook into st and pull up a loop. Immediately insert hook into next st and pull up a loop. 4 loops on hook. Yo and pull through all 4 loops. First hdc dec is made.

Bobble Stitch (bbl)

[yo, insert hook into st and pull up a loop, pull through 2 loops] 4 times (5 loops on hook), yo and pull through all 5 loops. Bobble stitch is made.

Gauge

At the end of Round 4, it should measure 3″ across.

Pattern Instructions for the Crochet Bobble Christmas Bauble

Make a magic circle. Ch 1.

Round 1: work 9 hdc in circle, join with a sl st to the first st, ch 1. (9 hdc)

Round 2: work 2 hdc in each st around, join with a sl st to the first st, ch 1. (18 hdc)

Round 3: work 2 hdc in first st, 1 hdc in next st. [2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next st], repeat from [ to ] around, join with a sl st to the first st, ch 1. (27 hdc)

Round 4: work 2 hdc in first st, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts. [2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts], repeat from [ to ] around, join with a sl st to the first st, ch 1. (36 hdc)

Round 5: work 1 hdc in each st around, join with a sl st to the first st, do not ch 1. (36 hdc)

*Pick up your contrasting color and pull that through the loop on your hook. This counts as the โ€˜ch 1โ€™. You can leave your first color attached since we will only be working 3 rounds with the contrasting color. Youโ€™ll easily be able to pick up the first color after these next 3 rounds :)

Round 6: (now working with the contrasting color) work 1 hdc in each st around, join with a sl st to the first st, ch 1, turn. (36 hdc)

*Make sure you turn your work after this round! We need to be working from the wrong side for Round 7

Round 7: this entire round is worked in the 3rd loop (this loop is facing you – the top 2 loops are where youโ€™d normally work a st, but since we are working from the wrong side, the 3rd loop will be directly in front of the st) work a hdc 3rd loop in the first st, work a bbl (3rd loop) in the next st [work a hdc 3rd loop in the next st, work a bbl (3rd loop) in the next] repeat from [ to ] around, ending with a bbl in the last st, join with a sl st to the first st. Ch 1, turn. (18 hdc, 18 bbl)

*Make sure you turned your work and are working from the right side again.

Round 8: working under both loops again, work 1 hdc in each st around, join with a sl st to the first st, ch 1. (36 hdc)

Fasten off your contrasting color and pick up the first color again.

*Round 9 is worked in the 3rd loop again.

Round 9: (now working with the first color here and throughout) work a hdc 3rd loop in the first st and in each st around (the 3rd loop is now at the back of your work since youโ€™re working from the right side). Join with a sl st to the first st, ch 1. (36 hdc 3rd loop)

Round 10: working under both loops again, work 1 hdc in each st around, join with a sl st to the first st, ch 1. (36 hdc)

Round 11 is a decreasing round, so we will be working the hdc dec all the way around.

Round 11: work a hdc dec over the first 2 sts and over the next 2 sts all the way around. Join with a sl st to the first st, ch 1. (18 hdc dec)

Now you can insert your bauble into the cover. We will be working the last round with the bauble inside.

Round 12: now with the bauble inside, repeat Round 11. Join with a sl st to the first st. Fasten off. (9 hdc dec)
