Advanced beginner.

Pattern notes

  • This pattern is written using standard US crochet terms.
  • This pattern is worked completely in the round, without joining.
  • You can adjust the size by increasing/decreasing in any multiple.
  • This is meant to have a somewhat snug fit around the bauble.
  • This bauble cover is finished by crocheting the last decreasing rounds with the bauble inside for the best fit.

Stitches used and abbreviations

  • sk = skip
  • ch = chain
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • yo = yarn over
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • hdc 3rd loop = half double crochet 3rd loop only
  • hdc dec = half double crochet decrease

Half Double Crochet 3rd Loop Only (dc 3rd loop)

Work a hdc as normal, except insert your hook into the very back loop (the third loop).

Half Double Crochet Decrease (hdc dec)

This is my version of the hdc dec, specifically for this pattern as a traditional hdc dec is a bit too thick.

*to make a hdc dec: yo, insert hook into blo of next st and pull up a loop. Immediately insert hook into blo of next st and pull up a loop. 4 loops on hook. Yo and pull through all 4 loops. First hdc dec is made.

Gauge

At the end of Round 4, it should measure 3″ across.

Instructions:

Make a magic circle. Ch 1.

Round 1: (Be sure to mark the 3rd loop of the first hdc worked in this round with a stitch marker) work 9 hdc in circle, do not join. (9 hdc)

Round 2: (Be sure to mark the 3rd loop of the first hdc worked in this round with a stitch marker) work 2 hdc in each st around, do not join. (18 hdc 3rd loop)

Round 3: (Be sure to mark the 3rd loop of the first hdc worked in this round with a stitch marker) work 2 hdc in first st, 1 hdc in next st. [2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next st], repeat from [ to ] around, do not join. (27 hdc 3rd loop)

Round 4: (Be sure to mark the 3rd loop of the first hdc worked in this round with a stitch marker) work 2 hdc in first st, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts. [2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in each of next 2 sts], repeat from [ to ] around, do not join. (36 hdc 3rd loop)

Rounds 5-?: continue working 1 hdc 3rd loop in each st all the way around until…you put the cover on the ornament and there is 1″ of space between the top and where you just finished. For me, this was 10 rounds total from the beginning.

Decreasing rounds:

At this point, I really wasnโ€™t counting stitches. I inserted my bauble and worked hdc dec all the way around until I was up to the top of the bauble. So here are the instructions:

Work a hdc dec over the next 2 sts, and over each of next 2 sts for approximately one round (use a stitch marker if needed).

Insert bauble into cover.

Continue to work a hdc dec over 2 sts all the way around until you have no more room to work sts.

Fasten off and weave in ends.
