The Lakeside Throw Crochet Blanket Pattern

Living in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York is honestly like being on vacation all year long. I feel so blessed to live in such a beautiful area. If you’re unfamiliar with the geography of New York State, the Finger Lakes are in the central/western part of the state – about 350 miles west of NYC. Lots of people assume I live in NYC when I say I live in New York, but in reality, I am a 6-hour drive from the city.

Winters here can be long and brutal, so having a big pile of blankets to snuggle up with on those cold days is a must. I named this crochet throw blanket ‘The Lakeside Throw’ because I live on Seneca Lake – one of the Finger Lakes. Seneca Lake is nearly 40 miles long and over 600 feet deep. In fact, it’s been more than 100 years since this lake has actually frozen over.

I chose the colors blue and white for this crochet throw blanket to represent this lake in the wintertime. Deep blue is for the mesmerizing blue color of the lake itself. And white to represent the white caps you see when the winter winds blow across it.

Pattern Notes:

  • This pattern is written using standard US crochet terms.
  • The chain 1 at the beginning of each row does not count as a stitch.
  • Worsted weight yarn is fine for this crochet throw blanket pattern too, however, keep in mind that your blanket will be on the smaller side – think ‘lap blanket’ size.
  • Gauge is not important since this is a blanket. Use whatever hook is proportionate to the weight of yarn you are using.
  • You can use whatever colors you’d like! However, in this pattern, I will be referring to the specific colors I used: Solstice Heather (blue) and White
  • The first row uses foundation half double crochet stitches while rows 2-99 use the herringbone half double crochet stitch.
  • You will begin changing color on the 6th row, so ensure you have your second color ready! (In my case, it was White)
  • This crochet throw blanket pattern comes with written instructions, a color graph and color block instructions (paid version only)
  • You will carry the yarn you’re not using throughout this pattern.

Stitches Used and Abbreviations (US TERMS):

  • ch = chain
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • yo = back loop only
  • fhdc = foundation half double crochet
  • hbhdc = herringbone double crochet
  • RS = right side
  • WS = wrong sided
  • W = white yarn
  • B = blue yarn

Foundation Half Double Crochet:

ch 3, yo and insert hook into the back bump of the 1st ch, yo and pull up a loop, yo and pull through one loop (3 loops remain on hook), yo and pull through all three loops on the hook.

If you need a more in-depth tutorial on how to make a foundation half double crochet, watch THIS VIDEO.

The Herringbone Half Double Crochet Stitch:

*hbhdc: yo, insert your hook into the stitch, yo, pull up a loop and immediately draw through one loop on your hook (two loops remain). Yo, draw through the remaining two loops on hook. Hbhdc is now complete.

Gauge:

(gauge is not super important for this pattern)

2 hbhdc x 2 rows = 1 square inch

Finished Size:

Length: 54”
Width: 37”

How to read this pattern:

ach row has either RS or WS at the beginning to differentiate between the right and wrong sides. Use this to coordinate with the color graph. All even-numbered rows are the RS and are worked from right to left on the graph. All odd-numbered rows are the WS and are worked from left to right on the graph.

To keep the wording to a minimum and not so redundant, I have only stated how many stitches per color you will be making in each row. For example, this is how you will read this excerpt:

“(W) x 2, (B) x 3“ means to start with the white (W), work 1 stitch with white, start the 2nd stitch with white and on the last pull-through before completing the stitch, drop the white, pick up the blue (B) and finish the stitch with that. You are now ready to work the next 3 stitches with the blue.

Where/how to drop your yarn:

Always ‘drop’ the yarn you’re not using the same way for each color (for example: white gets dropped to the front while blue gets dropped to the back) This prevents it from getting tangled. Be sure to carry the color of yarn that you’re not using. This means that you will lay the color you’re not using over the next stitch(es) and crochet over it. That way it’s there and ready to use when you need to change color.

How to change color:

Step 1. On the stitch before the color change, start as normal, but on the very last pull-through, drop the color you’re using, pick up the next color, and complete the very last pull-through with that. You are now ready to work the next stitch with the new color.

Step 2. There will be a small ‘line’ of yarn. You are going to work that into the next stitch by inserting your hook under that line of yarn plus the next stitch.

Step 3. Voila! No visible lines across the back of your work.

Written Instructions for the Diamond Crochet Throw Blanket

*The rows do not state this, but you will chain one and turn at the end of every row.

The stitch count at the end of every row will be 99.

Begin using the color Solstice Heather (blue).

Row 1 is a foundation row. Make 99 fhdc. Alternatively, you can chain 101, make one hbhdc in the 3rd ch from the hook and in each ch across.

Rows 2-99 will be hbhdc.

Rows 1-5 are solid blue rows. Have your white yarn ready to attach on Row 6. You will switch between blue and white for rows 6-94. Rows 95-99 are solid blue.

Color Graph for the Crochet Throw Blanket:

Each square on the graph represents one stitch.

All rows worked from the RS are even rows. You will read the graph from right to left on these rows.

All rows worked from the WS are odd rows. You will read the graph from left to right on these rows.

*Carry the yarn you’re not using throughout each row. To “carry” yarn means to lay it across the next stitch and crochet over it. Thus you are “carrying” it along until you need to use it again. This eliminates ‘lines’ of yarn across the back of your work.
