Easy Crochet Cowl for Fall
Hey yarny friend!
Let’s cozy up and talk about my latest project: the Hearthside Cowl, an easy crochet cowl for fall that I’m absolutely loving! This cowl is perfect for chilly days in our off-grid cabin, and I can’t wait to share the journey behind it. From some early stitch struggles to finding the perfect yarn, this easy crochet project has been such a fun ride. The full pattern and materials list are below, but here’s the story of how this crochet cowl came to life.

My Stitch Struggles: Designing My Crochet Cowl
You know how sometimes a crochet project doesn’t go as planned? That’s where I started with this easy crochet cowl for fall. I originally tried the diagonal chevron stitch, working in long rows because I thought it’d give a cool, wavy vibe. This stitch is awesome—usually done in the round, it creates a dynamic, textured look. I had high hopes it would make the Hearthside Cowl pattern pop.
But, ugh, it just wasn’t working. The self-striping yarn I picked clashed with the stitch, and the colors got all muddled. I crocheted through half the skein before I finally admitted it wasn’t right. So, I frogged it all and switched to short rows with a new stitch. That’s when this easy crochet cowl for fall started to feel like the cozy piece I’d imagined.

The Yarn: Plymouth Hot Cakes in Fox Mix
Let’s talk about the star of this cozy crochet project: Plymouth Yarn Hot Cakes in “Fox Mix.” This worsted-weight yarn (75% acrylic, 25% wool) is soft, durable, and perfect for an easy crochet cowl for fall—machine wash gentle, tumble dry low, so it’s super practical. Each 200-gram cake has about 404 yards, and the self-striping “Fox Mix” colorway has these warm, earthy tones that scream autumn in the woods. It’s like the yarn was made for my Hearthside Cowl pattern!
I found this skein in a sweet little yarn shop in Leavenworth, Kansas, during a trip last year. It got buried in my stash until I rediscovered it while cleaning up last week. Talk about a happy surprise—those fox-inspired colors were begging to be turned into something cozy.
If you can’t find Plymouth Yarn Hot Cakes, don’t worry! Other worsted-weight self-striping yarns work great for this easy crochet cowl for fall. Try Caron Cakes for bold, vibrant stripes or Lion Brand Mandala for a softer, lighter feel. For a solid-color Hearthside Cowl pattern, go with a wool-acrylic blend like Red Heart Soft or a hand-dyed indie yarn for a personal touch. Aim for about 400 yards to match the size.
This project is perfect for looking through your stash and seeing what you already have.

Why I Love the Spiked Sedge Stitch
Now, let’s get to the stitch that made this easy crochet cowl for fall come together: the spiked sedge stitch. I’m obsessed with it! It’s a twist on the classic sedge stitch, giving a textured, almost woven look that’s reversible and dense—perfect for keeping out the fall chill. You work a single crochet, a half double crochet, and then a spiked double crochet that reaches into the row below for a fun, textured pop.
What makes it so great? It’s beginner-friendly but still interesting, and it’s an easy one-row repeat, so you can crochet it on auto-pilot. It’s the ultimate comfort project—grab your hook, a cup of tea, and just zone out. No complicated counts or charts, just pure, relaxing stitching that’s ideal for cozy crochet projects like this Hearthside Cowl.

Crochet Cowl Pattern Instructions
Foundation: Ch 32 (or any multiple of 3 + 2).
Row 1: Sc, hdc, dc all in 2nd ch from hook. *Sk next 2 chs, (sc, hdc, dc) in next ch.* Repeat from * to * across until 3 chs remain. Sk 2 chs, sc in last ch. Ch 1, turn. 31 sts.
Row 2: (Ch 1 never counts as a stitch). Sc, hdc in first st. Locate the space from the previous row where 2 chs were skipped, and work a dc in that space. *Sk next 2 sts, (sc, hdc in next st), dc in the skipped sp from row below.* Repeat from * to * across until 3 sts remain. Sk 2 sts, sc in last st. Ch 1, turn. 31 sts.
Repeat Row 2 until your piece measures approx. 47″ long, or until you have just enough yarn left to sew the ends together.
Finishing: Sew short ends together to form a cowl. You can either whipstitch across or sl st across (I chose to sl st). Fasten off and weave in ends.
Optional: Skip sewing to wear as a scarf.
