Maybelline was a rescue we adopted at our local animal shelter a few months back. She is an absolute doll and such a joy to have! Because I am truly a crazy cat lady, I wanted to crochet her all of the things – and of course, the first thing I wanted to make for her was a crown.
I mean, look at her. She is royalty! Only the best for Miss Maybelline. So I set out the find the prettiest yarn and beads to make her the fanciest crown.

Free Crochet Pattern: Maybelline’s Cat Crown
In this crochet pattern, you will learn how to crochet with beads. If you’ve never crocheted with beads before, don’t worry. I walk you through this step by step through photo tutorials below. Additionally, I have a video tutorial on this as well. You can also find this below, so keep scrolling.
What if you don’t have beads or you simply don’t want to use them? No worries. I have included instructions to make this without the beads if that’s your preference.

This is a very easy crochet pattern! Additionally, it’s a great stash buster. So go grab your favorite worsted weight yarn and let’s get started.
What you will need to crochet a cat crown:
MATERIALS:
- approx. 6-10 grams of your favorite worsted weight yarn. I used Mighty Stitch Worsted from WeCrochet.
- 4.00mm crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends)
- optional: 15, 8mm beads with a 1.5-2mm opening
SKILL LEVEL:
- Advanced beginner. This pattern uses beginner friendly stitches. However, a beginner may find crocheting with beads to be a little challenging.
PATTERN NOTES:
- This pattern is worked in the round, using standard US crochet terms.
- The chain 1 at the beginning of each round does NOT count as a stitch.
- I have provided a non-beaded variation if you do not want to use beads.
- To adjust the size, you can increase (or decrease) the amount of starting chains in increments of 5. You can also use a heavier weight yarn and larger hook as well. Mighty Stitch worsted is a light #4, so even a ‘regular’ worsted weight would increase the size.

STITCHES USED AND ABBREVIATIONS (US TERMS):
- yo = yarn over
- sk = skip
- ch = chain
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- ps = puff stitch
- picot
HOW TO MAKE A PUFF STITCH:
- [yo, insert your hook into the st, yo and pull up a loop] repeat from [ to ] a total of 4 times. yo one last time and pull through all loops on your hook. Puff stitch made.
PICOT:
- ch 3, in 3rd ch from hook, make 1 sc. Picot made.
GAUGE:
1″x1″ square = 5 sc x 5 rows
FINISHED SIZE:
approximately 5″ across when crown is laying flat. When crown is open, it measures 4″ in diameter.
HOW TO CROCHET WITH BEADS:
*IMPORTANT: beads need to be strung on before you start crocheting! Count out how many you need (in this case, you will need 15). Using your tapestry needle, string them all on. As you work, you will continue pulling your working yarn through the beads until you need to use them.
WHEN IT’S TIME TO USE A BEAD:

1. Pull up a bead.

2. Push it all the way up to your work.

3. Holding the bead in front of your work, make your next stitch behind the bead.

4. Finished stitch with bead attached.
PATTERN:
ch 45 and join with a sl st to first ch being careful not to twist it, ch 1, turn.
Round 1: make one sc in first ch and in each ch around. Join with a sl st to first st. (45 sc)
Round 2 uses beads. If you are not using beads, please refer to Round 2 alternative. If using beads, you will make a sc in every st all the way around except you’ll be pulling up a bead on every 3rd stitch as shown in the photos above.
Round 2: ch 1, sc in each of first two sts, slide one bead up, [sc in each of next 3 sts. slide one bead up]. Repeat from [ to ] around. Join with a sl st to first st. (45 sc, 15 beads)
Round 2 alternative: ch 1, sc in each of first 2 sts, ps in next st, [sc in each of next 2 sts, ps in next st]. Repeat from [ to ] around. Join with a sl st to first st. (30 sc, 15 ps)
Round 3: ch 1, make one sc in first st and in each st around. Join with a sl st to first st. (45 sc)
Round 4: ch 1, [sc in first st, sk next st, {in next st, make the following: hdc, dc, dc}, picot, {in next st, make the following: dc, dc, hdc}, sk next st]. Repeat from [ to ] around. Join with a sl st to first st. (9 crown peaks)
Fasten off and, using your tapestry needle, weave in ends.
