The Harvest Crochet Stitch

Today, I’m going to teach you how to master the harvest crochet stitch. This beautiful crochet stitch gives warmth and texture in many creations such as cowls, sweaters and blankets.

Using just a one-row repeat, this is an easy stitch to master. So grab your yarn and hook, and let’s make a practice swatch!

  • your favorite yarn and hook combination


  • Intermediate beginner – the maker should know and be comfortable with basic crochet stitches first.


  • chain 1 does not count as a stitch
  • this stitch is a one-row repeat
  • start with any multiple of 3 + 2


  • ch/chs = chain/chains
  • yo = yarn over
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches
  • sk = skip
  • sc = single crochet
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • dc = double crochet

Instructions for the Harvest Crochet Stitch:

This tutorial is just for a practice swatch. However, if you’re a confident crocheter and want to just jump into making a project (dishcloth, scarf, etc.) then go for it!

Step 1: Make a ch of any multiple of 7 + 3.

Step 2: Work one sc in the second ch from the hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn.

Step 3: (Ch 1 does not count as a stitch) Work one dc in each of the first two sts.

Step 4: Skip two sts.

Step 5: Yo, insert your hook in the st and pull up a loop – repeat this a total of three times. You will have 7 loops on your hook.

Step 6: Yo and pull through 6 loops. Two loops remain on the hook.

Step 7: Yo and pull through both loops.

Step 8: Ch 2

Step 9: Working into the same st, repeat steps 5-6.

Step 10: Sk two sts.

Step 11: Work one dc in each of the next two sts.

Step 12: Repeat steps 4-11 for the remainder of this row. Ch 1, turn.

Step 13: Work one dc in each of the first two sts.

Step 14: Work a harvest st (steps 5-6) in the center of the harvest st from the row below (the ch-2 space)

Step 15: Make one dc in each of the next two dc sts from the row below.

Step 16: Continue to repeat steps 14-15 all the way across, ending with two dc in the last two sts. Ch 1, turn.

Step 17: Continue to repeat steps 13-15 (row 3) over again until your practice swatch is your desired size.
