Let’s crochet a little heart!

It’s getting close to Valentine’s Day and I thought I’d share this super quick and easy heart pattern with you.

When my son was very young, I remember making a bunch of these little hearts and adding them to his little Valentine’s bags to take to school and hand out to all his classmates. It was so simple to whip up a bunch all at once. Plus, it was nice to add something handmade to the usual candy and stickers you’d find in a Valentine’s Day baggie.

You can use these little hearts for so much! You can add them as an appliqué to finished crochet pieces such as cozies or blankets. You can add a loop and make them into ornaments or even string them on a garland. And I bet you could even make earrings out of them too!

Materials:

Stitches used and abbreviations: (US terms)

  • sl st: slip stich
  • ch: chain
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • tr: treble crochet

*Picot: ch 3, sl st in back bump of 3rd ch from hook

Small Heart Instructions

  1. Make a magic circle and ch 3
  2. In the circle, make these stitches in this order: 3 tr, 2 dc, 3 hdc, picot*, 3 hdc, 2 dc, 3 tr
  3. Sl st to ring, pull the tail to close your heart, fasten off and weave in your ends.

Make a magic circle and ch 3.

Make 3 tr.

Make 2 dc.

Make 3 hdc.

Ch 3.

Sl st in the back bump of the 3rd ch from the hook (the very first ch you made)

Sl st in back bump continued.

Picot stitch made.

Make 3 hdc.

Make 2 dc.

Make 3 tr.

Sl st to ring, pull tail to close your heart.

If you want to make these into ornaments, make an extra long tail when you make your magic ring. When you fasten off, make sure to keep that long as well. Tie up both ends together to create a loop. (This also saves you from having ends to weave in!)
