Why the Waffle Stitch?

The crochet waffle stitch is a crochet favorite for good reason! Its unique texture creates a thick, absorbent fabric that’s perfect for washcloths and dishcloths. Unlike more open stitches, the waffle stitch provides just the right amount of density, making it effective for scrubbing while still feeling soft on the skin. Plus, its visually striking pattern adds a touch of elegance to a practical item. If you’re looking for a stitch that’s as functional as it is beautiful, the waffle stitch is the way to go!

Row 2: work 1 dc in the first st, 1 Fpdc around 2nd dc from row below. 1 dc in each of next 2 sts, [1 Fpdc around the next dc from the row below, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts]. Repeat from [ to ] across until you get to the last 2 sts. Work a Fpdc around the 2nd to last st, 1 dc in very last st. Ch 1, turn. (10 Fpdc, 20 dc)

Row 3: work 1 dc in each of 1st 2 sts, Fpdc around each of next 2 sts from the row below. [1 dc in next st, 1 Fpdc around each of next 2 sts from the row below.] Repeat from [ to ] across until you get to the last 2 sts. Work 1 dc in each of last 2 sts. Ch 1, turn. (12 dc, 18 Fpdc)

Rows 4-14: alternate Rows 2 & 3, ending with a repeat of Row 2. Do not fasten off. You will now begin working the border.

Border:

The border is worked with the right side facing you, without turning your work. You will be working counter-clockwise around the washcloth. As soon as you finish Row 14, you will ‘turn the corner’ and continue down the left side of the washcloth, turn the corner again, continue along the bottom, turn the corner and work up the other side and finally turn the corner one last time and work along the top.

Side 1: ch 1, now working down along the raw edge, work 27 sc evenly along the left side of the washcloth. To ‘turn the corner’, work 3 sc in the very last sp of this side.

Bottom: work 1 sc in each foundation ch across. Work 3 sc in the very last foundation ch to turn the corner.

Side 2: work 27 sc up along the raw edge, just as you did for Side 1. Work 3 sc in the very last sp of this side.

Top: work 1 sc in each st across, ending with 3 in the very last st. Join with a sl st to the first sc worked.

Hanging Loop:

  • Ch 10, turn.
  • Sl st into last sc made.
  • Ch 1, turn.
  • With the right side of the washcloth facing you, work 18 sc into the ch 10 loop.
  • Join with a sl st to the base of the loop. Fasten off.

Cut a piece of yarn about 12″-18″ long. Begin wrapping the yarn around the base of the loop working upwards. I wrap it about 6 times up, and then go back down, about 6 wraps again.

Secure your ends, fasten off and weave in ends.
