Instructions for the Braid Crochet Stitch:

This tutorial is just for a practice swatch. However, if you’re a confident crocheter and want to just jump into making a project (dishcloth, scarf, etc.) then go for it!

Step 1: Start by making a ch of any multiple of 2. I started with 20.

Step 2: Locate the 5th ch from the hook.

Step 3: Work one dc in the 5th ch from the hook. Ch 1.

Step 4: Now, locate the ch right before the double crochet you just made.

Step 5: Work one puff st in that ch. So, yo, insert your hook into the ch and pull up a loop 5 times. You will have many loops on your hook.

Step 6: Yo and pull through all the loops.

Step 7: Ch 1.

Step 8: Skip the next ch.

Step 9: Work one dc in the next ch and ch 1.

Step 10: Now, go back and work a puff st into the skipped ch.

Step 11: Ch 1.

Step 12: Repeat steps 8-11 to the end of the row, ending with a dc in the very last ch. Row 1 is complete.

Step 13: Ch 3, turn. This space counts as the first ‘ch 1 space’. You will skip this space at first.

Step 14: Working into the spaces between the puff sts from now on, you will make one dc in the next ch 1 space (between the puff sts). Ch 1.

Step 15: Now, go back to the first space and work a puff st into that space. Ch 1.

Step 16: Working into the next space, work one dc and ch 1.

Step 17: Now, go back to the previous space and make a puff st. (You will be sharing this space with the dc in this same space) Ch 1.

Step 18: Continue to repeat steps 16 – 17 to the end of the row.

Step 19: To make the edges even, work one more dc in the very last space. Row 2 is complete.

Step 20: Continue to repeat row 2 until your practice swatch is your desired size

Don’t worry if your work is curling. This is normal and will straighten out as you add more rows.
