Stitches used and abbreviations
- sk = skip
- ch = chain
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- dc = double crochet
- hdc dec = single crochet decrease
Half Double Crochet Decrease (hdc dec)
This is my version of the hdc dec, specifically for this pattern as a traditional hdc dec is a bit too thick.
*to make a hdc dec: yo, insert hook into st and pull up a loop. Immediately insert hook into next st and pull up a loop. 4 loops on hook. Yo and pull through all 4 loops. First hdc dec is made.

To begin, locate these five spaces:
- The second chain from the hook
- The third chain from the hook
- The stitch where you made the chain-3
- The next stitch
- The next stitch
Insert your hook into each space, pulling up a loop each time until you have six loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull through all six loops, then chain one to close the starโthis completes your first star stitch. For subsequent stars, you’ll locate these spaces:
- The eye of the previous star
- The last two legs of the star
- The last stitch the star was made in
- The next stitch
- The next stitch
Insert your hook into each space, pull up loops as before, and finish the stitch the same way.
Half Double Crochet 3rd Loop Only (hdc 3rd loop)
Work a hdc as normal, except insert your hook into the very back loop (the third loop).
Gauge
At the end of Round 4, it should measure 3″ across.
