Jacob’s Ladder Bauble Pattern Details

Materials
- Heartland worsted yarn from Lion Brand
- 5mm (H8) crochet hook (or whatever size is needed to obtain gauge)
- scissors
- tapestry needle
- tape measure
- 3.15″ plastic bauble
Skill level
Advanced beginner.
Pattern notes
- This pattern is written using standard US crochet terms.
- The chain 1 at the beginning of the row, does not count as a stitch.
- This is meant to have a somewhat snug fit around the bauble.
- This bauble cover is worked flat, then sewn down the side. Once the bauble is inserted into the cover, each end is cinched closed using a tapestry needle
- Work under both loops unless otherwise indicated.
Stitches used and abbreviations
- ch = chain
- dc = double crochet
- st/sts = stitch/stitches
- sl st = slip stitch
- sl st blo = slip stitch back loop only
Slip Stitch Back Loop Only (sl st blo)
Work a sl st as normal, except insert your hook into the back loop. This creates a stretchy knit fabric.
Gauge
First 6 rows should measure 1″ across and 4-4.5″ in length

Pattern Instructions for the Jacob’s Ladder Bauble
Ch 19.
Row 1: work a sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook, sl st in next ch, work 1 dc in each of next 8 ch, ch 12, sl st in last dc just made, work 1 dc in each of next 6 chs, 1 sl st in each of last 2 chs. Ch 1, turn. (4 sl sts, 14 dc, 1 ch-12 loop)
Row 2: work 1 sl st blo in first 2 sts, working under both loops 1 sc in each of next 14 sts, 1 sl st blo in each of last 2 sts. Ch 1, turn. (4 sl sts, 14 sc)
Row 3: work a sl st blo in each of first 2 sts, work 1 dc in each of next 8 ch, ch 12, sl st in last dc just made, work 1 dc in each of next 6 chs, 1 sl st blo in each of last 2 chs. Ch 1, turn. (4 sl sts, 14 dc, 1 ch-12 loop)
Row 4: repeat Rows 2 and 3.
Work repeat of rows 2 and 3 until you have 24 rows total or until your strip reaches 8.5″ length down center.
Fasten off, leaving long tail for sewing.
Seaming the side:
- Fold the strip making sure the right side is facing you.
- Whipstitch in each st across making sure to insert your hook through both loops of both ends.
- Tack last loop to first loop.
Cinching the ends:
Flip your cover so the right side is now facing out. The longer end (with 8 dc) will be at the bottom of the bauble. Insert your bauble and tuck all the ends inside.
We will cinch the bottom first.
Thread a long piece of yarn onto a tapestry needle and begin to weave the needle in and out all the way around the bottom of the bauble. Tie off and pull the ends inside using your crochet hook.
Insert bauble into cover.
Repeat at the top of the bauble.
