The Pine Tree Christmas Bauble ๐ŸŽ„

What I love most about the crochet moss stitch is its versatility. For this bauble, the stitch adds a cozy yet polished feel, and when paired with your favorite yarn colors, it can transform into a piece thatโ€™s rustic, modern, or anywhere in between. Plus, itโ€™s a forgiving stitch, making it a relaxing project to work on during the busy holiday season.

This bauble is also a fantastic stash buster! Use leftover yarn from other projects to create a mix of coordinating or contrasting ornaments. You can even experiment with adding metallic threads or embellishments for a little extra sparkle.

So, grab your yarn and hook, make a cup of something warm, and let the magic of the moss stitch add a little extra love to your holidays. Happy crocheting!

Pattern notes

  • This pattern is written using standard US crochet terms.
  • This pattern is worked in the round.
  • Place stitch marker in first stitch of each round.
  • You can adjust the size by increasing/decreasing in any multiples of 10.
  • This bauble cover is finished by crocheting the last decreasing round with the bauble inside for the best fit.
  • Each block on the color chart represents one stitch. Count the number of blocks in each color, and crochet that number of stitches in the corresponding color. You will repeat each set of color blocks 4 times total.

  • ch = chain
  • st/sts = stitch/stitches
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • yo = yarn over
  • hdc = half double crochet
  • hdc 3rd loop = half double crochet 3rd loop only
  • hdc dec = half double crochet decrease

Single Crochet Back Loop Only (sc blo)

Work a sc as normal, except only insert your hook into the very back loop (instead of through both).

Single Crochet decrease (sc dec)

A single crochet decrease combines two stitches into one by inserting your hook into the next stitch, pulling up a loop, inserting into the following stitch, pulling up another loop, and yarning over to pull through all three loops on your hook.

Gauge

At the end of Round 4, it should measure 2.5″ across.

How to Change Colors in Crochet

Changing colors in crochet is easier than it seems! Follow these simple steps to transition seamlessly to a new yarn color:

  • Stop Before the Last Pull-Through
    • When you’re working your last stitch in the current color, stop just before completing the final pull-through.
  • Bring in the New Color
    • Take the new yarn color, leaving a short tail, and place it over your hook.
    • Pull the new color through the loops on your hook to complete the stitch.
  • Secure the Yarn
    • Gently tug both the old and new yarn tails to secure the transition.
    • Continue crocheting with the new color as if nothing changed!

You will carry the unused color along the back of your work and drop it at the color change point and pick it up again when needed.
